Clothes Steamers Buying Guide

Clothes steamer

1. What are Clothes Steamers?

Clothes steamers are also called garment steamers, fabric steamers, and sometimes called a dewrinkle steamer or steam dewrinkle device. These handy hand-held appliances are excellent to pack into your satchel or luggage when you travel or go for the weekend somewhere and you want your clothing to look fresh and not wrinkled.

The hot steam removes those creases, fold lines, and wrinkles using steam to diminish them.

There are several types of steamers available with three parts being the tank for the water where it will be heated, the nozzle at the top where the steam is released, and the very important heating element for heating the water fast. Of course it has a handle and an electrical cord to plug into the wall. None run on batteries.

For your business attire, formal wear, and casual clothing, a steamer frees you up from getting out the ironing board and iron. With portability and temperature control, you will be looking well dressed in no time at all with a garment steamer.

2. Benefits of a Clothes Steamer

Clothes folds outRight out of the box, you will save on those expensive dry-cleaning costs. One sweater today costs over $10 to have cleaned and tossed on a hanger.

You can use Woolite® at home Dry Cleaner for your cashmere, wool, and sweater blends, then steam them with a clothes steamer.

Steamers are fast and much quicker to use than the iron and ironing board task and do get the wrinkles and folds out.

  • Silks meltThere’s nothing to it and you don’t need to turn the collar around or worry about getting to close to the buttons that sometimes melt from an iron.
  • Steamers are gentle and won’t ruin your silks and polyester blends as an iron will do if you don’t put a wet cloth over the fabric before you start pressing with the iron. White fabrics such as men’s white dress shirts can scorch easily with an iron and a steamer won’t do that.
  • You cannot iron organza or chiffon so you take it to the cleaners to press it paying an exorbitant amount of money and wasting your time. A steamer can do this effortlessly.
  • Men’s trousers with pleats and women’s pants are a breeze to do with a steamer.
  • Steamers are wonderful for curtains and heavy pleated draperies with a lining.

Always use distilled water or purified water in your steamer. You do not want the minerals in your city water tap in your steamer or your steam iron that can clog the vent holes. Tap water can also leave stains on your garments and other fabrics and they are hard to get out if ever.

3. You Can Replace Your Iron with a Steamer

IronIf you’re wondering if you can replace your iron with a steamer, I’d say you can although I won’t do that because I like to hand-iron heavy clothes and do detail work and need the weight of an iron. Plus, both of them don’t take up much space.

IronSteamers are 99% more gentle on fabrics than irons and I’m so happy we don’t use this heavy iron anymore that had to be heated in the fire place before using it! I feel sorry for our ancestors before electricity. Even the wood handles were burned a bit.

Streamed clothes look better on your body falling naturally without being pressed flat on an ironing board.

4. Choosing a Garment Steamer

Stay within your budget if you plant to totally replace your iron and ironing board. You will use a steamer many times over the years and the one-time investment is indeed worthwhile. Steamers can run anywhere from about $30 up to $400+.

  • A small hand-held steamer is perfect if you are just going to steam T-shirts, smooth out skirts, and de-wrinkle curtains or drapes.
  • If you plan to steam many shirts, jackets, long coats, trousers and pants, and more, you will probably want to buy a larger unit with hangers and clips.
  • FabricA fabric steam press reviewed in #10 is for those of you who want those crisp pant seams like the dry cleaners do right at home yourself.
  • The fabric steam press steamer/ironer is like having an ironing board with steam in the lid that comes down on your garments. This type steamer is great for sheets, pillow cases, and more flat work.
  • How fast do you need it to heat up? Most will do that quickly in about a minute or less. They have large water tanks and run for quite a while continuously.
  • If you decide on one with a long pole, be sure you have the space to store it. Most handles on these fold down or break down for storing in your broom closet.

Tips Using a Garment Steamer

  • Water boils at 212-degrees F. (100-degrees C.) at sea level and makes steam. High Altitude: Water boils at less than 212-degrees F. (approximately 96-degrees F.). Each 500-foot increase in altitude causes a drop of about 1-degree in the boiling point. That’s how hot the steam gets. When water boils, it makes steam.
  • First thing, read your User’s Manual to understand how it functions and in what order you do those functions.
  • If you have never used a clothes/garment steamer before it might feel a bit intimidating. Once you get the hang of it, you just might like it better than an iron.
  • Add the water to the tank first, then plug it in. Distilled or purified water is best to not clog the unit’s head with the minerals from city tap water that can cause stains that might not be removable.
  • Garment steamers do not use batteries; they use electricity and plug into North American 110/120-Volt receptacles.
  • Be sure you know the fabric content that you will be steaming. Some fabrics fall apart quickly anyway. Others need lots of power (Wattage) to make your garments wrinkle free.
  • Don’t use heat settings higher than your fabric can withstand or you can damage them.
  • Don’t fill your water tank full-up if you only plan to steam a few items; you will have to dump the water to prevent mold and mildew, plus it heats faster.
  • Do you have the space to do your steaming? Some items don’t need to be on a flat surface such as drapes and bedding.

Final Thoughts

Clothes steamer reviewsYou just might want to do away with your iron and ironing board—but not your kids and pets.

I know I love my hand-held steamer, but since I like to iron—can you imagine—I still do my dress pants for the office with a steam iron filled with distilled water and an ironing board with one of those gray asbestos covers.

You can have the best of both worlds. I hope you discovered the value of using steamers reading my clothes steamer reviews above.

Leave me a question or comment in the box at the end of this page and I will reply to each one of you. Happy shopping!
